Assignment 4

  1. Design a 25-mm diameter singlet lens (one lens element) whose front curvature is three times the back curvature and whose difference of curvatures cv1 - cv2 = 0.016 mm-1. Calculate the center thickness (rounded to .1 mm) such that the edge thickness is between 3.9 and 4.1 mm. Use Matlab to draw the lens.

  2. Using the lens description in Smith, page 506, do the following:
    1. draw the lens,
    2. find its system matrix (from front to rear surface), and
    3. find the effective focal length (1/power) from the system matrix.

  3. Find the system matrix and power of a glass sphere of diameter 2R and index of refraction ng.

  4. Find the system matrix (front surface to back surface) for a two-ply window composed of a sheet 9 mm thick of index 1.52 followed by a sheet 13 mm thick of index 1.78.

  5. Find the system matrix for a thin lens of index 1.5 with water (index 1.33) on the object side and air on the image side. The first lens surface is 200 mm radius of curvature and the second is -300 mm radius of curvature. Find the power of the lens from the system matrix.
