Catalog Description

Chromatic aberrations: doublet lens; telephoto, wide-angle, and normal lenses; triplet lens design and variations; optimization methods and computer lens design; optical transfer functions; telescopes and microscopes; two-mirror telescope design: aspheric surfaces; prism and folded optical systems, rangefinders; gratings and holographic optical elements; anamorphic optical systems; zoom systems.

Grading System

2 exams (20%)
12-14 assignments and design studies (70%)
final design study (10%)

Note: formal exams may be waived if assignments and design studies go well.

Topics

Course Requirements

This course mixes lectures on geometrical optics and lens design with computer lab sessions using ZEMAX and Matlab.

Late, unexcused, assignments and design studies receive a maximum score of 70%.
